The mask you live in!

Have you noticed how difficult it is for boys to express themselves and talk about what they are feeling? And how dangerous it is for those who do, because they are soon the object of criticism and jokes. Regardless of the culture we are in, boys have never been given the freedom and the possibility to speak and feel what is happening to them.

Perhaps you believe this is explained by the cultural aspects, the habits, and even the family values in which a particular child was created. Surely these are some of the reasons, but why do we still maintain these behaviors and ideals?

I don’t have the answers too, but to help us understand what happened in our society, especially with boys, and reflect together on this subject, I share a touching and extremely necessary documentary.

The documentary 'The Mask You Live In' (2015), available on Netflix, makes us review our behavioral concepts, values, beliefs and sociocultural perceptions of what it is to be a man and how that knowledge and concept have influenced the conduct of society since early times. Inviting us to discuss the issue of masculinity and the effects of the male mask.

Under which mask do you hide? This is the question that involves men who need to hide their real feelings and emotions, because in them is the fragility destined for the woman. The documentary shows how this mask is passed from father to son and how the cycle of repression is established in a patriarchal society. They are fathers who show no affection - "because hugging is girlish" - demading virility and emotional discipline.

See you next time,
