Respect for the rhythm !

In some situations we use to say children are slow…slow to eat, to dress, to walk, to obey and many others. But are they indeed slow ? And compared to what?

In fact children are slow when compared to us, the adults. Adults tend to live in the 'after', in a hurry to get to the future. On the other hand, children live intensely and enjoy the present moment.

Unlike adults, they do not live to fulfill obligations, don’t think about the schedules or lists of tasks. They don’t suffer for the past and don’t wait too much for the tomorrow. They just live the moment.

Children have different rhythms, be they are biological (sleep, food); intellectual (to learn, to understand); affective (affection, attention). In this way, the rhythm of children is not equal to that of the adult, so meeting their needs must be within their rhythm and according to their needs.

Taking care of the rhythms and the basic needs of the children is fundamental to achieve a good development. To respect the rhythms of children is also to respect the stages of their development without advancing them. Children need us to respect their cognitive, affective stages that protect their innocence without yielding to the temptation to reduce the time of their childhood.

See you next time,
Laura
